Despite concerns from a handful of residents, environmentalists and others that a proposed mega-retail center on one of the last major swaths of open land in San Jose will negatively affect traffic and quality of life, the San Jose City Council on Tuesday night easily approved rezoning the area for such a project.
In a 7-to-1 vote, the council agreed to change the designation of about 45 acres of land on the northeast corner of Highway 85 and Almaden Expressway to commercial use only.
The council also denied a recent appeal of the project’s environmental impact report by an adjacent landowner concerned about a new traffic median that he thinks will affect some nearby businesses.
Mortgage lending rose by £1.6bn in January, twice the average for the previous six months, according to figures released by the Bank of England.
The increase, together with data indicating house price growth published by the Land Registry, suggests the housing market may be in the early stages of recovery.
Howard Archer, chief UK economist for IHS Global Insight and one of the most bearish of the housing market analysts, said: “With housing market activity trending up modestly, and the economy showing signs of improvement, the downside risks to house prices are abating.”
The number of loan approvals for house purchase rose to 58,728, higher than the previous six-month average of 52,839, the BoE said.
